Thank you everyone for submitting your pet products!  I know I said I was going to feature 3 products, but I ended up with more submissions than I had anticipated, so I decided to feature 5 products instead.  Thanks again.

1  http://www.DogWalkersBuddy.com

DogWalkers Buddy features a hands free dog leash. The more I think about it, the more I like this product. For all of you runners out there, this is the product for you. We all know how awkward it is to run with one hand out to the side holding that dog leash.

2  http://www.aikiou.com

I am a huge fan of keeping your pet mentally excercised as well as physically. This is a wonderful idea to keep your pets mentally fit. It is a doggy bowl/game for your pet to play with!

3  http://www.sunnydogink.com/page4.html

I think most of us underestimate the need for a first aid kit for our pets. I know the last thing we would want is for something to happen to our pet and not know what to do for them. This product is a must if you are taking your pet hiking or hunting.

4  http://www.sprinkspets.com

Sprinks offers some great product for pet travel. Calming music CD’s for keeping your pet calm, relaxing supplements and travel size grooming products.

5  http://www.furzoff.net

This is the next level of hair removal products. This product works better than most brushes used for removing hair from furniture and clothes.

Thanks again for your submissions.

Starting Your Own Pet Service Business – Part 1

February 17th, 2010

In the United States alone, pet’s reside in 69 million households, and over $38 billion dollars are spent on the pet industry annually ( http://smallbiztrends.com ). . . if you were not sure that you wanted to get into this industry, I hope you do now.

Requirements:

Must love pets and be able to relate well to them.  The whole point of life is doing something you enjoy.  If you are doing this to make a quick buck and don’t care for pets, this business will fizzle out quickly for you.  You need to be able to be loving but strict with pets.  When you are walking, grooming or training another persons pet, you need to have respect for their pet, but the pet has to also have respect for you.  This is a balance that some people have with animals and some don’t.  Make sure you are one of the people that was blessed with a strong connection to animals.

Choosing a Service:

Because you are just now starting your service business, I would suggest starting with the simpler pet services like dog walking, pet sitting or pet grooming.  These are all services that you can provide out of your home.  Dog walking and pet sitting don’t include much experience.  If you are familiar with dogs and cats, these services should be very simple.  Dog grooming can require a little more experience.  I would suggest reading a few books on the topic and testing them out on pets of friends and family until you have it down pat.  Most of it should be pretty simple: washing, shampooing, fur trimming and toenail clipping.

Getting Clients

Typically, I only use free forms of marketing and advertising to get new clients.  Here are a few tips that are Free, and will get you new clients in no time!

-Fliers- Print off some fliers and post them all around town: Library, Laundry Mat, School Message Boards, Dog Parks, etc.

-Create a Facebook Group- Let all of your friends know what you are starting.  Word of mouth will be one of your biggest resource for new clients, so make sure that you provide your service with the utmost quality.

-Post your new business on Pet Directories:  There are many Pet directories on the internet, but I would stick with the free ones to start.  We have a pet directory on our main site at http://limepaw.com/.  It’s totally free to post your profile and it only takes about 5 minutes.

This will be more than enough to get your started with your Pet Service Business!

Feel free to leave comments or ask questions

. . . and keep an eye out for part 2!

6 Free Must Have Web Marketing Tips

February 15th, 2010

I compiled this list of absolutely necessary FREE things that small businesses can use to increase traffic to their site with minimal time and no money.  I have arranged them in the order that I find suitable.  Hope you enjoy!

Social Networking

Can your small business do without social networking, maybe, but why take the risk.  Social networking is the best way to connect to not only your customers, but people in the same industry as you who can probably help you out.  When I first started using social networking sites my goal was to get as many customers as possible.  This didn’t happen right away, but what did happen was I began learning more about my industry then I ever knew before.  I made contacts with dozens people who had been in my shoes just a few years before. My business would not still be afloat without it.

Best Sites to Start with: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter

Blog

Blogs are totally free these days.  You can find some that will charge you for the bells and whistles that you don’t need yet, but to start, I would stick with blogger.com, wordpress.com or blogspot.com (wordpress is my fav.)  Most of these blogs will almost market your blog for your.  Make sure to update your blog as much as you have time for and add tags to every post so that they will be found by the search engines.  What to blog about?  Whatever you want.  I run a Pet Services Website and I am blogging about online marketing strategies (I would not suggest this.)  Blog about things that interest you, things that you think interest other people, or anything that pops into your head.  Either way, always link your blog to your webpage.  I usually try to throw my link into a few different paragraphs of my blog so that people notice it.

Did I Say Social? Bookmarking?

If you haven’t heard of site like digg.com and stumbleupon then you live under a rock and I’m amazed you found this article, let alone this computer. These websites get millions of hits every month, and the content is chosen by you!  The more people like a site, the more people are directed to it.  If your site is in good condition and you get lucky enough to get tons of hits from either of the sites I mentioned, you should have a good 2,000-5,000 pageview day.  That ain’t too shabby, eh?  Digg.com will give you more hits on the front end and stumbleupon will stay pretty steady throughout.  I could explain to you why, but it’s boring and you don’t really need to know.

Search Engine Optimization

This is one of those controversial topics.  Some people call it free, others say even if you do it yourself, it costs you time.  Well I say that everything costs you time, so is nothing free?  Either way, SEO is a great way to get organic search results.  This means that someone searched for a topic in google or yahoo, and your site came up as a result, and they clicked on it.  It’s that simple.  Unfortunately, getting your website to the top of those lists isn’t quite that simple.  There are many technical things that need to be done to help your SEO.  If you know a web designer this would be very helpful.  Due to the internet craze, they are a dime a dozen now and you can find out on elance.com for very cheap, or have a buddy help you for free.  Besides the technical side, there are a few things that you can do to help you SEO.  Make sure your website is updated frequently: add new text as often as you have time for.  Make sure that you articles or text are related to the keywords that your website is known for.

Did I say Social? Bookmarking?

Submit your website to social bookmarking site like stumbleupon, delicious and digg.com.  These sites allow you to categorize the topics on your site, and it will then show your site to people who are also interested in those topics.  People can “thumbs up” your site, or comment or review it.  The more positive feedback your site gets, the more visitors will get sent to view your site.

Link It All Together

This part is not absolutely necessary, but it will save you a lot of time in the long run.  Almost all of the site that I have mentioned will eventually prompt you to link your other networking sites to them.  This can be a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is super neat.  For instance, you can link your Twitter account to your Facebook account to your Blog to your LinkedIn account.  Every time you tweet or update your blog, Facebook with post your most recent posts on the front page of your Profile Page!  When you post something on your Facebook page, or Tweet something, it will show up on your Linked in profile.  This saves  time because instead of copying pasting your posts to all of yout networking channels, you can simply use one and they all share this information with each other!
